Meet the Team: Sze-Von, Customer Success and International Projects

Sze-Von, Primo Toys employee, holding Cubetto, the wooden robot that teaches coding to children; coding for kids; teach kids to code

Often the first point of contact for the Primo Toys community, sunny Sze-Von Lam is also our youngest team member and a steady beam of positivity both for customers and in the office. A definite people person, she epitomises our company focus on happy customers.

I’m responsible for…

Helping our customers reach their goals with Cubetto! Every day I work closely with our logistics, education, product and marketing teams to ensure as smooth and happy a customer experience as possible. Alongside this, I assist in managing relationships and projects with our partners and teams abroad so that we are able to expand the positive impact we are making on children across the globe.

On a typical day…

You’ll find me in dialogue with our brilliant community, fixing as many problems and assisting with as many queries as humanly possible. On top of this, I’ll be relaying any feedback internally so that we are able to better our toys, resources and levels of service. I can also be found conducting video hangouts with Primo Toys Korea or nipping in and out of the office kitchen on my hourly sugar prowl!

I got here…

I’ve always been a strong believer in the power of education. It’s imperative that we build a future generation of creative, inquisitive, collaborative individuals and I know how important it is to start this journey young. I wanted an international, people-facing career which allowed me to utilise my communication skills and collaborate with others to build something I really believed in. Taking all this into consideration, joining Primo Toys seemed only like the natural next step!

In my past life…

I was a free-spirited English major, fundraiser, TEFL teacher, arts ambassador and project manager for an educational tour company. The free-spirited part still rings true. 🙂

My most memorable work moment…

It’s difficult to choose! In my previous job I ran educational tours to Hong Kong, and the most memorable was the first one that I co-ordinated and managed fully solo. We met with some insanely inspirational people (including David Yeung, Co-Founder of the Green Monday environmental movement), and I had a lot of fun with the group of twenty-five or so MBAs I was leading! I have roots in Hong Kong so it was a privilege to be able to share my culture with many who had never even stepped foot into Asia, and I discovered a lot more about my heritage and Hong Kong’s business environment along the way.

The best part of my job…

Is different each day! Some days, having a truly heartwarming conversation with a customer can make my week. Other days, the challenge of constant improvement and innovation is what drives me. I love that we never just settle, which is what makes me super excited for our future!

The most challenging part of my job…

Honestly? Letting people down. Though I like to think this is a rarity, there are occasionally situations and outcomes outside our control which result in disappointed clients or unhappy customers. We do our best to rectify these, but it always upsets me when we aren’t able to help more.

My special talent…

Probably lies in my ability to look at all results and situations through a positive lens. It’s not really a talent, but I think it’s one of the things which sets me apart!

Outside of work…

I can most likely be found eating, reading about food, or searching for the next best restaurant to roll my gluttonous self into. As for the part of me which likes to adult, I love exploring quirky new events and talks in London, and keeping active at the gym with ClassPass. Learning is a never-ending journey!

My signature dish…

My go-to dish currently would be soy and honey broccoli with fried garlic. However, thanks to the wonderful crew at Mindful Chef I’m also pretty tight on the sweet potato seafood pie front.

I’m inspired by…

Random acts of kindness. A quote from my favourite childhood author, Roald Dahl: “A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.” (From The Twits)

My great ambition…

Is to live life with no regrets.

When I retire…

I’m not sure I’ve even thought about this yet. I’d love to be that cute yet badass grandma figure who owns a hedgehog bubble tea café or backpacks around the world with a bicycle and tent.

If I wasn’t in international business…

When I was younger, I consumed books obsessively and spent almost every waking moment at the table with my coloured crayons and sketch pad. Mini me would have loved to become a children’s book writer and illustrator.

My advice to someone who wants to get into this line of work…

Stay curious and explore the things that make you happy. A fulfilling career will follow. 🙂
